Washington and Manila have approved more than 500 joint military operations for 2026, reflecting a deepening security partnership. The agreement was finalized during the annual Mutual Defense Board-Security Engagement Board meeting in Hawaii, which established schedules and guidance for next year’s exercises. The program covers multi-domain drills, live-fire exercises, maritime patrols, air defense training, humanitarian missions, and cyber-defense initiatives. Balikatan 2026 will be a central event, enhancing interoperability and operational readiness. Both nations reaffirmed commitments under the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty. U.S. forces will provide additional troops, technology, and rotational deployments, while the Philippines will offer expanded access to training areas under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement. Officials stressed the operations are purely defensive, aimed at improving readiness and ensuring regional stability amid ongoing tensions in the South China Sea.
