Rheinmetall has secured a major German contract to expand the Bundeswehr’s Infantry Soldier of the Future – Enhanced System program. Valued at over 1 billion euros, the award covers 237 new platoon systems along with upgrades for previously fielded equipment. The package will equip 8,600 soldiers and increase total program deliveries to 353 platoon systems and roughly 12,000 personal equipment sets. Deliveries are expected from 2027 through 2029. The IdZ-ES concept is focused on improving battlefield coordination by networking infantry units with vehicles and command elements. A standard platoon system consists of 35 integrated soldier kits containing body protection, communications devices, navigation aids, optics, optronics, and weapon enhancements. Squad leaders manage information flow through a digital command computer that links personnel with Boxer armored vehicles, Puma IFVs, and potentially future airborne platforms. Germany’s order builds on a broader framework signed in 2025 with a ceiling value of 3.1 billion euros and completion targeted by 2030. Rheinmetall says more than 30 partner companies support the effort. The procurement reflects Germany’s push to modernize infantry forces with connected, data-driven combat systems suitable for high-intensity operations.
