“In order to create one of the most potent shipboard laser weapons in the world, the US Navy has launched a $29.9 million initiative.
The goal of the initiative, known as SONGBOW, is to eliminate complicated dangers such as hypersonic glide vehicles, cruise missiles, and drone swarms at the speed of light.
The core of the system is a 400-kilowatt laser created by combining several 50-kilowatt emitters into a single, precisely guided beam that represents a major improvement over current shipboard capabilities.
