The US Army will receive FN America’s flagship M240L lightweight medium machine guns under a $4.9 million deal.
The order is based on the inclusion of the NATO-standard weapon into the military in 2010 as part of a development program aimed at creating a lighter but more resilient rifle for soldiers.
The weight of the M240L is 18% less than that of its predecessor, the M240B medium machine gun, but its range and firepower are still the same.
The 7.62×51-millimeter rifle’s titanium construction makes it around 5 pounds (2.2 kilograms) lighter than its predecessor.
It is also the structural architecture of the company’s M240 family of machine guns, and its overall design is based on the FN MAG 58 general-purpose gun that the US military has been using since the 1970s.
