Taiwan’s Iron Cavalry Vehicle Adds New Reconnaissance CapabilityTaiwan is developing a new indigenous reconnaissance vehicle designed to strengthen battlefield awareness and mobile operations. Developed through the Iron Cavalry Project, the platform is expected to enter production with 246 vehicles scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2033.The vehicle will be used for reconnaissance, security patrols, and counterattack missions, complementing rather than replacing Taiwan’s existing Humvee fleet. The Armaments Bureau is leading the program, while local research organizations are responsible for key technologies, including the mobility system and electro-optical reconnaissance equipment.Powered by a 205-horsepower engine, the four-wheel-drive vehicle can reach speeds of 100 kilometers per hour and travel approximately 500 kilometers. Its telescopic sensor mast can detect and observe targets at distances of up to 12 kilometers. A remotely operated 12.7mm weapon station provides additional protection and fire-support capability.The program reflects Taiwan’s wider focus on battlefield resilience and maintaining military operations during a prolonged crisis or disruption to critical infrastructure.
