The US Air Force has awarded Vectrus Systems a new contract to support Iraq’s fleet of F-16 fighter jets, expanding on similar work the Colorado-based company secured earlier this year. Valued at approximately $252 million, the agreement provides base operations support, life-support functions, and security services at the Martyr Brigadier General (BG) Ali Flaih Air Base in Salah al-Din province. The work is scheduled to continue through September 24, 2026. This award represents a continuation of long-running US contractor involvement in maintaining Iraq’s F-16 capabilities. Over the past decade, persistent threats from Iran-backed militias and disruptions caused by temporary US contractor withdrawals have periodically affected sustainment efforts. Renewed support from Vectrus helps reinforce operational continuity for Baghdad’s air fleet. Iraq operates 34 F-16 fighter jets, first delivered in 2014 during the height of the US-led campaign against the Islamic State (IS) under Operation Inherent Resolve. These aircraft remain a critical asset for delivering precision strikes on remaining extremist cells and securing central Iraq. The F-16s are stationed at the Martyr BG Ali Flaih Air Base, located roughly 60 to 70 kilometers (37 to 43 miles) north of Baghdad. The base serves as the country’s primary hub for fixed-wing strike missions and plays an essential role in ongoing counter-IS operations. Continued contractor support ensures Iraq retains a functional airpower capability as it works toward improved self-sufficiency.
