Kratos Defense & Security Solutions has been awarded a Phase 1 contract by the US Navy to establish an in-house sustainment program for the AN/SPY-1 radar, a cornerstone sensor of Aegis-equipped cruisers and destroyers. The initiative, part of Project Anaconda, seeks to shift maintenance, repair, and modernization responsibilities from external vendors to Navy-run operations. Phase 1 focuses on building capabilities to repair, overhaul, and test radar subsystems such as transmitters, signal processors, and antenna arrays, with total program value projected at $175 million across multiple phases. Additionally, Kratos will develop the Indiana Radar Integration Complex near the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane to function as a central integration, sustainment, and prototyping facility, expected to be operational by 2027. This program aims to extend the operational lifespan of AN/SPY-1 systems, reduce maintenance delays, lower costs, and retain technical expertise in-house. While SPY-6 radars are deployed on newer vessels, the legacy SPY-1 arrays remain vital for fleet readiness and long-range air and missile defense. The effort aligns with broader modernization goals, including software standardization under the Integrated Combat System initiative, to enhance interoperability and operational efficiency.
