According to the MoD, this initiative will maintain the system’s role as a provider of “significant firepower” across operations. FN Herstal, recognized as the UK’s sole supplier of military assault rifles and machine guns, will carry out the upgrades at its Kent site. Delivery timelines outline a staggered process, with 18 percent completed by March 2026, half of the fleet by March 2027, and final completion by March 2028. The L111A1’s enhancements focus on operational performance: a new soft mount to mitigate recoil, a quick-change barrel for faster adaptation under fire, and improvements to sustain accuracy and soldier safety. Weighing 32 kilograms and capable of firing .50-caliber ammunition at up to 635 rounds per minute, the weapon delivers versatile firepower across land and maritime domains. Its 2,000-meter effective range allows forces to engage enemy vehicles, defensive positions, and personnel with precision.
