German defense company Rheinmetall is converting a former automotive components factory in Berlin to produce casings for 155-millimeter artillery shells. The facility, previously operated by Pierburg, will transition from manufacturing engine pumps and valves to shaping steel projectile bodies. More than 200 employees have already moved into Rheinmetall’s weapons and ammunition division as part of the shift. The expansion comes as the company significantly increases artillery shell production following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Rheinmetall plans to boost annual output to about 1.1 million rounds by 2027, supported by facilities in Germany, Spain, Hungary, and Lithuania.
