The first of two signals intelligence (SIGINT) vessels being produced by Swedish defense business Saab has been launched by the Polish Navy.
The ORP Jerzy Różyck, named after the Polish mathematician who cracked the code of the German Enigma coding machine during World War II, will collect intelligence information from all domains of maritime electronic intelligence, including naval bases and other ships.
It is also anticipated that the ships will carry out hydroacoustic reconnaissance against underwater threats from both manned and unmanned vehicles. The ships are a component of the Delfin program, which aims to replace two old Project 863 Moma-class radio reconnaissance ships that were built in 1975 and 1976.
In November 2022, Saab was given a contract worth around 620 million euros ($730 million) for the initiative, with delivery anticipated in 2027.
The first ship began construction in April 2023, and the second in November 2023.
Remontowa Shipbuilding, a Polish ship manufacturer, is constructing the ships at its shipyard in Gdansk.
