The US State Department has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Norway involving the MK 54 MOD 0 lightweight torpedo system, valued at $162 million, reinforcing defense cooperation between Washington and Oslo. Norway has requested up to 50 torpedoes, including associated components, containers, software, training, spares, and repair parts, as well as contractor engineering and technical support. RTX Corporation, based in Arlington, Virginia, has been designated as the principal contractor. The MK 54 torpedo is a modern anti-submarine warfare (ASW) weapon deployed by US Navy surface ships, aircraft, and helicopters. Its design incorporates commercial-off-the-shelf processors and updated tactical software, enabling effective operations in both shallow and deep waters. Measuring 106.9 inches in length, weighing 607 pounds, and carrying a 100-pound high-explosive warhead, the system can track, classify, and destroy hostile submarines under challenging conditions. The proposed sale aligns with US policy objectives to strengthen NATO allies’ defense capabilities, enhancing Norway’s ability to deter undersea threats while improving interoperability with US and allied forces. This deal follows earlier approvals of MK 54 torpedo sales to Saudi Arabia, India, and Germany, demonstrating Washington’s commitment to supplying advanced ASW systems globally. The torpedo’s proven performance and versatility make it a valuable asset for Norway’s navy, particularly as Arctic security dynamics evolve and submarine activity in the North Atlantic rises. US officials emphasized that implementation will involve the temporary deployment of American government and contractor personnel to Norway for oversight and integration support. The deal underscores Oslo’s continuing efforts to modernize its naval arsenal, while highlighting the US role as a key defense partner in Europe.
