Kratos Defense & Security Solutions has been awarded a Phase 1 contract by the US Navy to establish a domestic maintenance program for AN/SPY-1 radar systems, integral to Aegis cruiser and destroyer operations. The contract marks the first stage of Project Anaconda, a multi-phase plan to move radar upkeep from third-party contractors to Navy-run facilities. Initially, Kratos will develop repair, testing, and overhaul capabilities for radar components such as transmitters, antenna arrays, and signal processors. The program’s total value may eventually reach $175 million across all phases. As part of the initiative, Kratos will build the Indiana Radar Integration Complex near the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane, which will serve as a hub for radar integration, prototyping, and sustainment, with operations planned for 2027. The project seeks to prolong the service life of SPY-1 radars, maintain fleet readiness, and preserve specialized technical knowledge. Despite the introduction of SPY-6 radars on newer ships, hundreds of SPY-1 arrays remain critical to naval operations. The effort aligns with the Navy’s broader modernization strategy, including standardizing software under the Integrated Combat System to enhance cross-platform compatibility.
