The Dutch Ministry of Defence has signed a high-value contract with Rheinmetall Air Defence to acquire Skyranger short-range air defense systems, reinforcing the Netherlands’ layered protection against aerial threats. Valued in the high triple-digit million-euro range, the program will deliver a two-digit number of systems in both mobile and fixed configurations between late 2028 and the end of 2029. Production will be shared across Rheinmetall entities, with the first three prototypes built in Switzerland and subsequent systems assembled largely in the Netherlands, ensuring strong domestic industrial participation. Once operational, the Skyranger platforms will be assigned to the Ground-Based Air Defence Command at Vredepeel. Designed to counter drones, helicopters, aircraft, cruise missiles, and loitering munitions, Skyranger integrates sensors, command systems, a 30mm revolver cannon, and short-range missiles. Future upgrades are expected to include laser weapons, reflecting the Netherlands’ response to evolving drone threats seen in recent conflicts.
