The Royal Australian Navy has launched NUSHIP Pilbara (OPV 205), its third Arafura-class offshore patrol vessel, during a ceremony at the Henderson Maritime Precinct. Named after Western Australia’s Pilbara region, the ship marks a significant milestone in Australia’s ongoing SEA1180 Phase 1 program to replace older patrol platforms. Built by Civmec Defence Industries, Pilbara is the first OPV constructed in Western Australia and the largest naval vessel ever produced in the state. The Arafura-class design supports border security, resource protection, and regional engagement missions, aligning with Australia’s 2024 defense strategy. The ship will now undergo outfitting and sea trials before delivery to the fleet in 2026. Three more vessels are under construction at CDI, including Gippsland, Illawarra, and Carpentaria. Each OPV features modern surveillance systems, communications equipment, and a 25-mm autocannon for close-in defense. With 4,000-nautical-mile range and 21-day endurance, the class strengthens Australia’s maritime presence across the Indo-Pacific.
