Navantia’s shipyard in Cartagena has achieved a significant milestone in the S-80 Programme, completing the installation of the Hydrogen-based Air Independent Propulsion System (AIP) into an S80 class submarine. This marks the first time a third-generation AIP has been fitted into a submarine. The event was attended by Spanish National Armament Director, Admiral Aniceto Rosique Nieto. This unprecedented accomplishment in Spanish shipbuilding history will grant the Spanish Navy’s submarines the ability to remain submerged for extended periods, far surpassing the few days typically seen with conventional diesel-electric submarines.
