South Korea and Malaysia have formalized a defense cooperation pact aimed at advancing joint efforts in weapons development and military modernization.
The agreement establishes a government-to-government framework to guide Malaysia’s defense upgrades, covering fighter jet programs, naval shipbuilding, and missile development.
It further enables joint R&D, co-production, and international marketing of defense equipment.
According to South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), the pact represents the outcome of “long-standing trust and effort,” marking only Malaysia’s second such defense agreement with another nation.
Seoul reiterated its goal of being a “true partner” in strengthening Malaysia’s defense capabilities and fostering regional peace.
The two nations’ defense ties date back to 1993, when South Korea supplied K200 infantry fighting vehicles. More recently, in 2023, Korea Aerospace Industries secured a $920-million deal to deliver 18 FA-50 light combat aircraft to Malaysia.
