Tokyo has chosen Austrian firm Palfinger Marine to provide launch and recovery systems for its new generation of FFM-class frigates. The contract involves outfitting the first five ships, scheduled to enter production under MHI from 2027 through 2036. The Stern-LARS equipment will streamline the deployment of boats and USVs from the frigates’ stern ramps, increasing mission safety and efficiency by reducing reliance on cranes or manual processes. Palfinger has a track record with Japan, having supplied similar systems for the 12 Mogami-class frigates already in service. The new FFM-class builds on the Mogami design with key modifications: a hull extended by 10 meters and widened by 1 meter, creating more space for expanded operations, particularly with unmanned maritime vehicles. These adjustments reflect Japan’s defense strategy to prepare for increasingly complex naval operations, including anti-submarine warfare, surveillance, and mine countermeasures. The Mogami vessels, first entering service in 2022, were multipurpose platforms; the FFM-class takes this foundation further by prioritizing unmanned integration. Palfinger’s technology ensures faster, safer operations and aligns with Japan’s long-term plan to field modern, flexible warships.
