A new collaboration between Leonardo DRS and Hofmann Engineering will advance next-generation propulsion technologies for allied naval fleets under the AUKUS defense pact. The agreement leverages Leonardo’s experience in hybrid and electric propulsion systems and Hofmann’s large-scale production capacity in Western Australia. The partnership seeks to develop innovative propulsion solutions capable of meeting the higher energy requirements of future surface and subsurface vessels. Focus areas include hybrid-electric, all-electric, and steam propulsion technologies, as well as joint research for export-oriented defense projects. The initiative supports AUKUS objectives to expand industrial capability, foster innovation, and enhance interoperability among partner nations. Leonardo DRS brings experience from programs such as the U.S. Navy’s Columbia-class submarines, while Hofmann contributes precision engineering expertise. Together, they aim to reinforce supply chain security and strengthen Australia’s naval manufacturing ecosystem.
