Canberra and London are deepening defense ties through the Copperhead project, a collaborative effort to design a field-adaptable missile system. Combining Australia’s Sharktooth small missile with the UK’s modular testbed, the program seeks to create low-cost weapons that can be rapidly assembled, reconfigured, and deployed in combat. The plug-and-launch approach promises unique battlefield flexibility, standing apart from longer-cycle, expensive systems like JAGM. With growing concerns over evolving missile and drone threats, Copperhead is being positioned as a scalable, affordable deterrent, reinforcing allied innovation and complementing NATO-standard munitions in future high-tempo conflicts.
