The Ministry of National Defense of Taiwan has formally announced a significant expansion of its artillery modernization plan, which includes the purchase of 168 M109A7 155mm tracked self-propelled howitzers from the United States. The goal of this new acquisition is to replace the outdated fleet of traditional artillery platforms in Taiwan with a plan for 40 units. The purchase includes an unknown quantity of M992A3 field artillery ammunition supply vehicles, which have the same improved chassis as the M109A7, increasing logistical integration and battlefield efficiency. With an estimated total value of over NT$90 billion, or about $2.75 billion USD, this acquisition is among the largest expenditures made toward strengthening Taiwan’s ground combat capabilities. The M109A7, created as part of the Paladin Integrated Management (PIM) program of the U.S. Army, has a new chassis, an improved powerpack, modern digital fire control systems, and better crew protection. These enhancements will greatly increase the Republic of China Army’s mobility, firepower, and resilience in high-threat situations. Taiwan’s ability to maintain continuous fire support during extended operations will also be increased by the M109A7’s compatibility with modern artillery networks and automated logistics systems.
