AM General has unveiled a new evolution of its iconic High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), aimed at meeting the demands of next-generation battlefields defined by networked operations and electronic warfare. The revamped platform builds on decades of combat heritage and integrates modern technologies for improved survivability, connectivity, and mobility. Branded as the “HMMWV Next Gen,” the vehicle features a strengthened chassis, enhanced suspension system, and modular architecture allowing rapid mission reconfiguration—from troop transport to command and control, and even light weapons carrier roles. It is designed to be lighter and more fuel-efficient while supporting greater payload capacity than previous variants. The company has incorporated advanced power management and digital backbone technologies to ensure the HMMWV remains relevant in multi-domain operations. This includes open architecture interfaces for unmanned systems control, integrated communications suites, and electronic warfare resilience. AM General officials highlight that the Next Gen variant serves as a bridge between legacy fleets and future electric or hybrid military vehicles. The platform can be adapted for both internal combustion and hybrid propulsion options, positioning it for emerging energy transition requirements across global defense markets. The vehicle was recently showcased at defense exhibitions, drawing interest from multiple international customers seeking affordable yet advanced light tactical mobility solutions. Analysts view the move as a strategic response to increasing competition from JLTV platforms and foreign light armored vehicle manufacturers. With this upgrade, AM General aims to reassert its leadership in the light tactical vehicle segment by aligning its product roadmap with future US and allied force requirements.
