BAE Systems has received a $62-million award from the US Navy to create a dedicated service depot for the E-2D Hawkeye’s AN/APX-122A IFF system.

The new center will expand the Fleet Readiness Center Southwest in San Diego and will offer comprehensive maintenance services, including testing, diagnostics, repair, and troubleshooting. Damon Brady, BAE’s director of Tactical Systems, stated that the depot will improve operational availability, reduce lifecycle costs, and ensure faster turnaround for mission-critical systems.

BAE has a long history in IFF technology, including a $15-million 2023 contract for AN/UPX-50(C) interrogators and a $30-million 2025 award to modernize AN/APX-123A(V) transponders across Navy platforms.

The E-2D Hawkeye, manufactured by Northrop Grumman, is a carrier-based airborne early warning and control aircraft powered by Rolls-Royce T56-A-427A turboprops, capable of speeds over 300 knots and altitudes up to 37,000 feet. Its AN/APY-9 radar detects air and sea targets at ranges beyond 550 kilometers, while the AN/APX-122A IFF system improves situational awareness and rapid identification of friendly forces.
