The Israeli Ministry of Defence has selected BIRD Aerosystems to upgrade Apache attack helicopters with its Airborne Missile Protection System (AMPS), featuring the compact µDIRCM (Micro Directed Infrared Countermeasure). Jointly developed with Israel’s defense R&D directorate, the µDIRCM is one of the lightest systems available, weighing under 7 kilograms and optimized for wingtip installation. It combines infrared tracking with high-power solid-state lasers to jam incoming missiles, offering strong protection against MANPADS and modern heat-seeking threats while minimizing false alarms. BIRD’s Vice President Matan Perry said the contract marks a major milestone, with the system providing unmatched protection for small and large platforms alike, amid growing global demand for lightweight self-defense solutions.
