Canada has selected Magellan Aerospace to manufacture the M72 Light Anti-Tank Weapon (LAW), marking a major step toward expanding domestic production of critical infantry weapons for the Canadian Armed Forces. The agreement supports the government’s objective of strengthening Canada’s sovereign defense industrial base by localizing the assembly and production of one of the world’s most widely used anti-tank systems. By manufacturing the M72 LAW domestically, Canada aims to improve supply chain resilience, reduce dependence on foreign suppliers, and ensure a secure source of critical munitions during future operational requirements. The contract also supports the government’s broader strategy of increasing national defense manufacturing capacity while reinforcing a North American and NATO-compatible industrial base. Awarded under Canada’s Munitions Supply Program, the initiative promotes long-term partnerships with industry to deliver modern weapons, ammunition, and defense systems for military forces. According to Magellan Aerospace, the agreement strengthens national security while preserving high-value manufacturing jobs and advanced engineering capabilities within Canada. The M72 LAW is a lightweight 66mm shoulder-fired anti-armor weapon capable of penetrating armored vehicle hulls and fortified positions. Since entering service in the 1960s, it has been widely used by armed forces around the world, including in recent conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, demonstrating its effectiveness in modern battlefield operations.
