Charles River Analytics has been given $1 million by the US Navy to create a tool that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to identify enemy submarines by their magnetic signals.In contrast to conventional acoustic detection techniques, the Guidance for Naval Enhancement of Tactical Operations (MAGNETO) tool makes use of the fact that submarines, which are made of ferromagnetic materials, disrupt the magnetic field of the Earth.However, the company said that only detecting magnetic fields is not enough for successful anti-submarine warfare.
