Leonardo is set to be granted a contract by the US Navy to provide thousands of airborne countermeasures for the service’s F-35 Lightning II and F-18 Hornet/Super Hornet/Growler combat plane fleets.
According to a statement from Naval Air Systems Command, it “intends to negotiate and award” the company’s UK segment a fixed-price contract, which will cover the cost of labor, materials, equipment, and overhead.
The project, if approved, will create 3,000 to 6,000 Active Expendable Decoys (AEDs) each year, along with field service representatives, spare impulse cartridges, support equipment, and maintenance. The BriteCloud expandable active decoy, which has a self-contained, battery-powered radio frequency architecture for passive or preventative security, is one of the AED goods from Leonardo that are expected to be included in the project.
It is now available in a round form with a diameter of 55 mm (2.1 in) and a weight of 1.1 kg (2.4 lb), as well as a rectangular form with a length of 155 mm (6.1 in) and a weight of 0.5 kg (1.1 lb).
