Ireland is about to get its first primary military radar system that can identify aircraft designed to avoid conventional detection, such as those with sophisticated stealth technology. The Irish military will be able to use the new radar to spot hijacked aircraft as well as planes that are deliberately flying with their transponders turned off, a technique frequently employed by drug traffickers and other criminals.
At the moment, Ireland is unable to autonomously keep an eye on such dangers in its airspace.
The radar is expected to be a cornerstone of Ireland’s national security strategy once it is deployed, providing real-time tracking and early warning throughout Irish-controlled airspace.
