The “New SSM” anti-ship missile from Kawasaki Heavy Industries is set for a test launch in the 2027 fiscal year, as revealed at the International Aerospace Exhibition in Tokyo on October 17, 2024. Designed for long-range strikes from beyond enemy defenses, the missile uses a compact, efficient turbofan engine and has wings for horizontal flight. Its similarities to the U.S. Tomahawk in terms of range, form, and function have earned it the informal name “Japanese Tomahawk.”
