The first No Manning Required Ship (NOMARS) prototype has been completed by Serco and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The goal of the NOMARS project is to create a fleet of medium-sized autonomous surface vehicles that will be used to carry US Navy payloads without the need for human interaction or mission systems. The initial testbed, called the “USX Defiant,” will now be put through rigorous waterborne testing in the theatre and at the dock.
