NVL Group has commenced construction of the German Navy’s first reconnaissance ship, the new Type 424 intelligence-gathering vessel (AGI), by cutting its steel. This initiates the fulfillment of an amended 2023 contract where the Bremen-based firm, in collaboration with Lürssen Werft, is tasked with building three Type 424 ships to replace the German Navy’s aging Type 423 Oste-class AGIs. Although specific features remain undisclosed, these vessels are reported to be approximately 132 meters (433 feet) long and are designed for electronic and signals intelligence missions. The first Type 424 AGI is anticipated for delivery in 2029, followed by the others in 2030 and 2031. The contract also mandates NVL Group to deliver training and a reference facility in 2027.
