Oslo has formally committed to purchasing two additional Type 212CD submarines from Germany’s TKMS, expanding its future submarine fleet to six units and elevating program costs to nearly 100 billion kroner. The decision follows parliamentary backing and reflects growing concerns about Russian submarine operations extending from the Kola Peninsula to the North Atlantic. The 2021 joint order with Germany covered six boats—four for Norway and six for Germany—based on a 46-billion-kroner Norwegian budget. Exercising the option, combined with inflation and exchange-rate factors, drives costs upward. The first submarine will deliver in 2029, with subsequent boats arriving through the mid-2030s, enabling a phased and stable transition from the aging Ula-class fleet.
