Sikorsky, part of Lockheed Martin, has unveiled the Nomad family of next-generation VTOL drones, which merge characteristics of both helicopters and airplanes. Featuring a twin-proprotor design, the drones can perform vertical takeoffs, hover in place, and fly efficiently over extended distances. They utilize Lockheed Martin’s MATRIX autonomy platform, developed in partnership with DARPA, providing open-system capabilities suitable for rotary and fixed-wing unmanned platforms. The Nomad drones are intended for missions that require long-range surveillance, reconnaissance, and rapid repositioning. Their versatile design allows operations in diverse environments, with the ability to hover for observation and transition to fast forward flight for area coverage. The platform represents an evolution in unmanned systems, emphasizing flexibility, endurance, and adaptability for complex operational requirements.
