Spain has celebrated a milestone in naval modernization with the launch of the F-111 Bonifaz, the first of five F-110-class frigates designed to strengthen the Spanish Navy’s capabilities. Launched ahead of schedule, the ship already has more than 70 percent of its construction finalized, underlining Navantia’s efficiency in delivering on one of the nation’s largest defense programs. The F-110-class, known as the Bonifaz-class, will replace the veteran Santa María-class, whose ships entered service nearly four decades ago. Approved in 2019 with a €4.3 billion investment, the program underscores Madrid’s commitment to equipping its navy with cutting-edge vessels for multi-domain operations. Three ships are currently under construction at Navantia’s Ferrol shipyard, with deliveries scheduled between 2028 and 2030, while the full class is expected to enter service by 2032. With a length of 145 meters and a beam of 18 meters, the frigates are engineered for comprehensive warfare roles spanning anti-submarine, anti-surface, and air-defense missions. They will also participate in joint operations and maritime security tasks alongside civil authorities. The Bonifaz is fitted to carry 150 personnel and a helicopter such as the SH-60 Seahawk, supported by an arsenal that includes torpedoes, surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missiles, guided munitions, and advanced naval guns. Propulsion relies on a hybrid system combining gas turbines and diesel engines, driving controllable-pitch propellers to achieve speeds over 25 knots. Analysts highlight that this program is not only about renewing fleet numbers but about embedding next-generation technologies into Spain’s defense posture. The F-110 integrates advanced sensors, digital combat systems, and improved survivability features, enabling the navy to remain competitive in NATO missions and global maritime security challenges. For Navantia, it reinforces its reputation as a leader in European shipbuilding, while for Spain, it reflects a strategic commitment to maintain sovereignty and modernize its fleet in a rapidly evolving global security environment.
