Theon International has been awarded a major deal by Germany’s BAAINBw to equip the Bundeswehr with state-of-the-art night-vision goggles and IRIS-C infrared cameras, significantly improving the German Army’s visibility and threat-detection capabilities. The contract supports Germany’s push to modernize soldier equipment under the Digitalization of Land-Based Operations (D-LBO) initiative, which aims to link soldiers, vehicles, and command systems through advanced sensor and communication technologies. Theon’s IRIS-C systems combine uncooled infrared sensors with digital imaging and optical fusion, allowing troops to clearly identify heat signatures and targets in complete darkness, smoke, or fog. The night-vision devices are designed for comfort and durability, giving soldiers longer endurance in extended missions. Together, the systems deliver all-weather 24-hour operational effectiveness. Theon, headquartered in Greece, will manufacture the systems at its European production sites and collaborate with local German defense firms to handle training, logistics, and lifecycle maintenance. The company already supplies similar systems to NATO allies, including the Netherlands and France, reinforcing interoperability within the alliance. For Germany, this deal highlights its growing commitment to equipping frontline forces with best-in-class optical technology as part of its broader rearmament and readiness program launched after 2022. Enhanced night-fighting and surveillance capabilities are seen as critical to ensuring tactical agility and deterrence within Europe’s evolving security environment. The partnership with Theon International further underscores Berlin’s preference for proven, European-built technologies to strengthen supply-chain independence and reduce reliance on non-EU vendors. The procurement also helps expand Theon’s footprint in the European defense market, establishing a stronger presence in Central and Northern Europe while contributing to the modernization of NATO’s collective land forces.
