Leonardo DRS has announced a strategic collaboration with KNDS to propose the Caesar 155 mm self-propelled howitzer (SPH) for the US Army’s future artillery modernization effort. The alliance seeks to blend KNDS’s combat-proven Caesar mobile gun system with Leonardo DRS’s advanced C4ISR, power management, and US manufacturing capabilities. Under the agreement, Leonardo DRS will serve as the US prime contractor and system integrator, responsible for final assembly and production within the United States, ensuring compliance with “Buy American” requirements and logistical support for the Army. The Caesar system, developed by KNDS France (formerly Nexter), has been battle-tested in multiple conflicts and is currently in service with nine countries. Its unique design mounts a 155 mm/52-caliber gun on a 6×6 truck chassis, delivering superior mobility, rapid deployment, and precision fire capability with ranges beyond 40 kilometers. The system’s relatively low weight and strategic mobility allow it to be air-transportable by C-130, a distinct advantage for US expeditionary forces. The Leonardo DRS–KNDS proposal will likely target the Army’s future self-propelled artillery replacement for legacy M109 Paladin systems and augment the service’s mobile fires portfolio alongside emerging Precision Strike Cannon and Extended Range artillery projects. Company officials emphasized that the Caesar’s operational record in Ukraine and other theaters demonstrates high survivability and shoot-and-scoot performance essential for modern battlefields dominated by counter-battery threats and drones. If selected, the team plans to localize production through Leonardo DRS facilities in the US Midwest and integrate American subsystems, creating domestic supply-chain value and potential export opportunities for allied markets.
