Romania has signed a €223-million ($260 million) agreement with Turkey to acquire a HISAR-class corvette, along with crew training and a full logistics support package. The procurement is part of Romania’s long-term effort to upgrade its Naval Forces with modern vessels capable of patrolling maritime infrastructure and supporting combat missions in the Black Sea. Approved by the Homeland Defence Supreme Council in March 2025 and unanimously backed by parliamentary defense committees in September, the program ensures the ship will be fully operational upon delivery. The HISAR corvette is a 2,300-ton multi-role warship measuring 99 meters and designed for anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine operations. Its armaments include a 76 mm OTO Melara gun, Rolling Airframe Missiles, Mk 32 torpedo tubes, and remote weapon stations for close-in defense. Equipped with advanced 3D radar, sonar, and electronic warfare systems, the platform supports integrated, networked naval operations. Turkish HISAR-class corvettes are currently active in the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean Sea, undertaking maritime security patrols, escort missions, and anti-submarine operations. They also regularly participate in NATO exercises such as Dynamic Manta, demonstrating their interoperability and high-end warfare capabilities. The class has proven useful for guarding strategic maritime assets, including offshore energy facilities and major shipping routes.
