A new maritime research vessel, JS Akashi (AGS-5107), has been launched in Yamaguchi Prefecture by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for Japan’s naval forces.
The ship is intended to gather crucial oceanographic data on seabed features, temperature fluctuations, and potential marine assets for operational and academic purposes.
Named after Akashi City, the vessel reflects a legacy linked to WWII-era aircraft and defense manufacturing in the region.
