Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force has inducted JS Chōgei (SS-517), the fifth Taigei-class submarine, marking continued progress in modernizing its submarine fleet. Constructed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the vessel features advanced technologies, including lithium-ion batteries that provide greater endurance compared to traditional systems. The submarine is designed for multi-role operations, including surveillance, anti-surface warfare, and anti-submarine missions. With a displacement of 3,000 tonnes and a top speed of 20 knots, it offers a balance of stealth, mobility, and firepower. The platform is also capable of deploying advanced weapons, potentially including next-generation systems under development. Assigned to Yokosuka, the submarine will play a critical role in securing key maritime routes and monitoring regional activity. The Taigei program underscores Japan’s strategic focus on strengthening its naval capabilities in response to evolving security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.
