Japan has introduced the Armored Modular Vehicle (AMV) into service as part of efforts to modernize the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) fleet. This next-generation personnel carrier replaces the Type-96 and was officially unveiled at a ceremony in Hokkaido’s Muroran Plant of Japan Steel Works. The event was attended by the JGSDF Chief of Staff, highlighting its importance for national defense.

The AMV XP 8×8, designed by Finnish company Patria, was chosen in 2022 for Japan’s modernization program. A 2023 licensing agreement allows Japan Steel Works to produce the vehicles domestically, with the first unit built in Finland and local production set to start in September 2025.

The new armored platform stands 2.4 meters tall, is 8.1 meters long, and 2.8 meters wide. It has a payload capacity of 15,000 kilograms and a maximum combat weight of 32,000 kilograms. Its design emphasizes both protection and versatility, featuring modular armor systems against ballistic, mine, and IED threats.

The vehicle can reach speeds above 100 kilometers per hour and travel up to 1,000 kilometers without refueling. According to the JGSDF, the AMV’s mobility and survivability make it suitable not only for domestic missions but also for international peacekeeping operations, where Japan continues to contribute.
