The Italian Navy is preparing to begin procurement of two advanced destroyers under the DDX program, a €2.7-billion initiative aimed at replacing the long-serving Durand de la Penne class. Construction will be handled by Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, with the new ships building on the FREMM Evolution design lineage. Although initially planned for contract award in 2023, requirement definition challenges delayed the program, underscoring the complexity of integrating next-generation naval capabilities. Measuring approximately 175 meters and powered by a combined diesel, gas, and electric propulsion system, the destroyers are designed for high-end air defense, surface warfare, and land-attack missions. Expected features include vertical launch cells for Aster missiles, potential integration of cruise or evolved anti-ship missiles for strike operations, and aviation facilities supporting two medium helicopters. The DDX program reflects Italy’s intent to maintain a blue-water naval presence with highly capable surface combatants.
