Construction of Italy’s next-generation U212 NFS submarine fleet has progressed with the keel-laying of the first vessel at Fincantieri’s La Spezia facility. Designed to modernize the Italian Navy’s underwater combat capabilities, the new class will replace legacy submarines with platforms featuring improved sensors, communications, and autonomous technologies. Armed for multi-mission operations, the submarines will conduct strike, surveillance, and unmanned system deployment missions. With advanced propulsion and reduced acoustic signature, the U212 NFS is expected to deliver enhanced survivability and long-term operational performance when it enters service later this decade.
