The Italian Navy has contracted Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri to construct two more Pattugliatore Polivalente d’Altura (PPA) multipurpose combat ships.
The ships will take the place of a pair that were originally intended for the Indonesian Navy.
Fincantieri is the primary contractor, with Leonardo as a partner, in the contract, which is managed by the Organization for Joint Armament Cooperation.
In 2029 and 2030, respectively, the ships will be delivered in the “light plus” configuration. Fincantieri’s integrated shipyards in Riva Trigoso and Muggiano will handle the construction.
The project is expected to cost around 700 million euros (about $810 million), and that sum covers the work that has already been done on the ships bound for Indonesia.
