India has commenced construction of its first artificial intelligence-powered patrol vessel, designed to enhance maritime security and conduct multi-role missions throughout its exclusive economic zone. The new vessel, named the Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV), marks a significant step in modernizing the country’s naval capabilities with smart technologies.
The NGOPV will span 117 meters (384 feet) in length, have a displacement of approximately 2,700 tons, and accommodate up to 121 crew members. Engineered for both speed and endurance, the vessel will reach a top speed of 23 knots (around 43 kilometers or 26 miles per hour) and possess an operational range of 5,000 nautical miles (9,260 kilometers or 5,754 miles). This enables it to carry out prolonged missions and respond quickly to threats or emergencies in contested or remote maritime zones.
Equipped with advanced sensors, navigation systems, and AI-enabled operational tools, the NGOPV is expected to significantly boost India’s naval surveillance, reconnaissance, and enforcement capabilities. The AI integration will assist in real-time threat detection, situational awareness, and mission planning, making it a versatile asset for modern naval warfare and coastal protection.
This initiative aligns with India’s broader maritime strategy to strengthen indigenous defense production and maintain security in vital sea lanes. Once completed, the NGOPV will not only bolster the country’s maritime domain awareness but also serve as a model for future naval platforms incorporating emerging technologies.
