During a landmark visit by the Indian Prime Minister to Nigeria, both nations advanced their strategic partnership through a series of agreements signed on November 12, focusing on defense, economic development, and food security.

A major outcome of the visit was India’s formal offer of the LCA-Tejas Mk1A fighter jet to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), aimed at modernizing Nigeria’s air capabilities. To facilitate the procurement, India has extended a USD 200 million Line of Credit, allowing Nigeria to acquire the jets from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

The NAF seeks to replace its ageing Chengdu F-7NI fleet with more capable platforms. The Tejas Mk1A—a modern, single-engine, multi-role combat aircraft—offers an advanced and cost-effective solution, underscoring India’s commitment to deepening defense cooperation with Nigeria.
