Facing a capability gap in heavy airlift operations, the Indian Air Force is focusing on extending the operational life of its IL-76 fleet through comprehensive modernization initiatives. Originally inducted in the 1980s, the aircraft remain essential for transporting troops and equipment, despite declining numbers and maintenance challenges. Supply chain disruptions have complicated access to critical components, prompting the IAF to rely on innovative solutions, including local industry participation for repairs. Planned upgrades include more efficient engines and advanced digital avionics, which will improve performance and extend service life. These efforts are aimed at ensuring the fleet remains viable until next-generation transport aircraft become available, maintaining India’s strategic mobility capabilities.
