In a significant move to bolster its air combat capabilities, the Indian Air Force (IAF), in partnership with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has launched a project to modify six Su-30 MKI fighter jets. This initiative is focused on integrating the indigenous Astra missile series, marking a key milestone in India’s pursuit of self-reliance in defense technology. The Su-30 MKI, a critical component of the IAF’s combat fleet, is being upgraded to deploy Astra missiles, advanced beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles (BVRAAM) developed by DRDO. These missiles are designed to engage aerial targets at extended ranges, significantly enhancing the IAF’s strategic reach and operational effectiveness.
