Indonesia’s defense shipbuilding ambitions advanced with the ceremonial launch of KRI Balaputradewa-322, the first Arrowhead 140-class frigate to be constructed domestically for the Indonesian Navy. Built at PT PAL Indonesia’s Surabaya facility, the ship reflects Jakarta’s strategy to localize complex naval construction while leveraging proven foreign designs. The 140-meter frigate features a Combined Diesel and Diesel propulsion system capable of reaching 28 knots and is optimized for extended operations across Indonesia’s vast maritime domain. Designed as a true multi-role combatant, the vessel supports air defense, surface warfare, anti-submarine missions, and electronic warfare operations. Its primary armament includes a 64-cell VLS, dual 76mm guns for surface and shore engagements, and a 35mm CIWS for point defense against asymmetric threats. Launched on December 18, Balaputradewa-322 is the first of two frigates ordered and signals Indonesia’s growing ability to design, integrate, and field advanced surface combatants through its domestic defense industry.
