India is pushing forward with a strategic defense partnership with France to co-develop fighter jet engines, signaling a strong move toward defense self-reliance. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh recently approved the prototype of the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), a 5th-generation fighter, calling it a milestone for India’s aerospace future. The initiative comes alongside India’s April deal to procure 26 Rafale jets from Dassault Aviation, intended to replace aging MiG-29Ks and complement the existing Rafale fleet. Singh pledged that domestic military contracts worth $100 billion will be rolled out by 2033 to stimulate homegrown defense manufacturing. India has also opened a large helicopter facility, commissioned its first locally-built aircraft carrier, expanded its submarine and warship fleet, and successfully tested hypersonic missile technology, all reinforcing its ambition to emerge as a major aerospace and defense power.
