To acquire the most recent AMRAAM missile variants for air defense and aerial attack capability, the Australian government will spend 2.12 billion Australian dollars ($1.39 billion).
The announcement comes after the US State Department gave its permission in April for the sale of up to 200 units each of the AIM-120C and AIM-120D AMRAAM missiles to Australia.
The 120C-8 is intended for the National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System (NASAMS), whereas the 120D-3 will be utilized on Australia’s F/A-18F Super Hornet, EA-18G Growler, and F-35A Lightning II aircraft.
The NASAMS are being inducted by the Australian Army’s new 10th Brigade in an effort to strengthen the nation’s air defenses at short to medium range.
The Foreign Military Sales Program of the US government will be used to acquire the weaponry.
