The Indian Navy has signed a deal with Italy’s WASS for 48 Black Shark Advanced heavyweight torpedoes to arm its six Kalvari-class Scorpene submarines. The ₹1,896 crore agreement, finalized at the end of 2025, is slated for deliveries from April 2028 through early 2030. The BSA torpedoes feature cutting-edge guidance, propulsion, and counter-countermeasure systems designed for stealthy underwater strikes. WASS highlights the potential for technology transfer and co-production in India, supporting local industry development in torpedo electronics and propulsion systems. By integrating these advanced weapons, India strengthens its submarine fleet’s operational versatility and undersea deterrence, preparing for future platforms such as Project 75I conventional submarines and forthcoming SSNs.
